The Office Plant, 2022

As part of nature's design, the leaves of some tropical rainforest plants create splits and holes, allowing wind or sun to pass through them. It is referred to as leaf fenestration.

A domestic version of the Strelitzia reginae, a plant found in many homes and offices, uses this strategy of leaf fenestration. It is recommended to keep the plant away from strong airflow created for example by an office ventilation system, as this creates stress to the plant resulting in leaf fenestration.

In this work the stress coping mechanism of the plant is linked to the atmosphere of the corporate office, a place where stress thrives. Some leaves of the photographed plant as well as the silver-gelatine print of the work itself, are perforated with an office perforator, referring to stress coping mechanisms.
